Holidays in the beautiful Serifos, hotels, renting rooms, bars
Seriphos or Serifos is a Greek island municipality in the Aegean Sea, located in the western Cyclades, south of Kythnos and northwest of Sifnos. Serifos Island Greece is part of the Cyclades Island group. It is still a very unknown destination for many tourists who come to Greece. Serifos Island has retained its traditional look and is filled with wonderfu people full of hospitality. A quiet island for the most part, with some of the most beautiful beaches and landscapes of the Cyclades. Serifos is known as the barren one and, according to legend, its one time king Polydeukes was turned to stone along with everything that was beautiful on the island. The islands fate was sealed by Perseus who was reputedly washed up on these rocky shores as a boy along with his mother Danae. The pair were locked in a box and tossed into the sea by Danaes vengeful husband after she gave birth to Perseus by the all powerful god Zeus. Danaes great beauty brought the unwanted attentions of the islands king so Perseus punished the lascivious Polydeukes by slaying the snakehaired Gorgon Medusa and brandishing her head before the king who was duly petrified.
The islands lack of commercialisation means it does not have its own airport. The nearest airport is on Milos, to the south west of. Daily ferry services connect the island with Piraeus, Kimolos and Milos. Less frequent ferries run to and from the islands of Kythnos, Paros, Syros and Folegandros. Ferries run once a week to Santorini, Ios and Sikinos. If you have got more cash than time, catch a fast boat from Piraeus, Milos or neighbouring Sifnos.
You will arrive at the ferry port of Livadi, in an elongated bay in the south east corner of the island where the majority of holiday accommodation is centred. The port has its fair share of waterfront cafes, tavernas and music bars and is a good base for accessing the islands main beaches and the lovely hilltop capital of Hora. You will need to be a keen walker or hire a set of wheels to explore the rest of the island which is peppered with traditional villages, pretty white chapels and farms where tomatoes, vines and olives are cultivated in fertile valleys nestling amid the barren hills. Serifos Island is an island gem with numerous sandy beaches and a beautiful capital perched on the top of a steep hill. The rocky coastline is deeply indented with an alteration of coves and bays. The island has a unique atmosphere and attracts an increasing number of visitors.
