Greek Cinema has not enjoyed much attention like its American counterpart, Hollywood or its Indian rival; Bollywood. The gap was caused by inadequate state funding coupled with some prohibitions here and economic crisis. Regardless of these mishaps, the film industry keeps churning out interesting flicks. It would not be out of place to say that in recent decades, Greek Cinema has been coming up for air and these are some breathtaking movies to prove their prowess.

Nicholas Triantafyllidis released this blockbuster. The movie which hit Greek cinemas in 2014 follows the life of two young gentlemen who were highly submissive to their boss whom they called ‘The Master.’ ‘The Master’ was heavily into smuggling and loaning of money. The gentlemen, Giannis and Hermes held ‘The Master’ in high esteem and did all the dirty jobs until love struck them. This movie shows how old school love can survive in a world plagued with evil and hard choices.

Chevalier

Chevalier is a comedy flick about half a dozen men who decided to take a break from their busy lives and set sail on an elegant yacht. Things take a different turn when the yacht develops a problem, and the 6 men decided to bid time by playing a game. The game centered on picking the best man among them and giving the winner a Chevalier ring. This 2015 movie by Athina Rachel Tsangari throws more light on the vanity and narcissistic tendencies of menfolk.

Dogtooth

Dogtooth is a world-renowned movie that shot Greek cinema into the limelight. The award winning movie by Yorgos Lanthimos which was released in 2009 throws more light about the connection between human instincts and behaviors that human learns. Dogtooth revolves around three young adults who lived in a remote part of town with their parents. Their parents make them believe that they will only gain their freedom from the outside world when they finally lose their dogtooth.

The powerful film which is both fictional and non-fictional was about a drug addict who decided to leave a Spartan life after he was released from jail. He retired to his grandfather’s quaint house in the village but was met with hostility by the apprehensive locals.

The world popularly known as ‘The City’ is the ideal environment for romantic partners, in the incident where one becomes single, the person gets transferred to a facility called ‘The Hotel’ to get a partner before 45 day window period elapses. The movie centers on the protagonist, David. The movie was directed by the iconic director, Yorgos Lanthimos.
